Wimbledon Leisure Centre
At Stamford Contracts, we pride ourselves on delivering complex projects that require precision, innovation, and a high level of expertise. One of our standout projects was our work on the Wimbledon Leisure Centre, specifically the design and installation of a 40-metre self-supporting Central Atrium Lantern Light over the gymnasium. This intricate and ambitious structure not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the leisure centre but also contributes to its energy efficiency and overall user experience.

Project Overview
The Wimbledon Leisure Centre is a well-known facility serving the local community with its wide range of recreational activities. The centre’s gymnasium is one of its core spaces, and the need for a modern, open, and naturally lit environment was paramount to enhancing the overall experience for visitors. The challenge was to design a structural solution that allowed maximum natural light into the gym while maintaining structural integrity and energy efficiency.
The central feature of this refurbishment was the installation of a 40-metre self-supporting Atrium Lantern Light. This structure, suspended above the gymnasium, provides an abundance of natural light, creating a bright, open atmosphere while reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Challenges and Solutions
Structural Design and Engineering:
One of the most significant challenges was ensuring that the 40-metre lantern light was both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound. A key consideration was that the lantern light needed to be self-supporting to avoid the need for additional supporting columns, which would have disrupted the open plan of the gymnasium.Working closely with our in-house architects, structural engineers, and surveyors, we developed a sophisticated design that utilised lightweight, yet durable materials to create a strong, self-supporting structure. Our integrated team approach ensured smooth collaboration between all departments, resulting in a seamless and innovative solution that was both visually striking and technically advanced.
Precision Installation:
Installing such a large and complex feature required meticulous planning and execution. The installation process involved using state-of-the-art equipment to lift and position the 40-metre lantern light with extreme precision. We carefully coordinated the logistics to ensure minimal disruption to the existing structure and surrounding facilities, completing the installation on time and to the highest standards.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency:
At Stamford Contracts, we are committed to incorporating sustainable solutions into all of our projects. The Atrium Lantern Light at Wimbledon Leisure Centre was designed not only to improve aesthetics but also to enhance energy efficiency. By flooding the gymnasium with natural light, the lantern light reduces the reliance on artificial lighting during the day, significantly lowering energy consumption and operational costs for the facility.Additionally, the materials used for the lantern light were selected with sustainability in mind, ensuring a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution that contributes to the centre’s overall environmental performance.
User Experience Enhancement:
The result of the project was a transformed gymnasium space, now bathed in natural light. The open, bright, and modern environment enhances the user experience, creating an uplifting atmosphere for visitors. The lantern light not only improved the visual appeal of the space but also contributed to the overall well-being of gym users, providing a natural, airy environment ideal for fitness and relaxation.
